Generator fuel storage guide
Backup power is only as reliable as the fuel behind it. Planning fuel storage ahead of storms and outages makes generator use less stressful.
This guide walks through basic ideas for deciding how much fuel to store and handling gasoline and propane more safely.
How much fuel to plan for
The “right” amount of fuel depends on your generator size, how many hours per day you'll run it, and how long typical outages last in your area. Many people plan for at least 24–48 hours of intermittent use and build from there.
Gasoline storage basics
- Use approved fuel containers, stored in a detached shed or well-ventilated area.
- Add fuel stabilizer if gas will sit for more than a month or two.
- Rotate stored fuel periodically so it doesn't go stale.
Propane storage basics
Propane cylinders store well for long periods when kept upright, outdoors, and away from ignition sources. Larger stationary tanks are managed by propane suppliers and sized for your usage patterns.
Tip: you can always use the calculators on the GeneratorCalc home page to turn these ideas into rough numbers for your specific generator and situation.
